The Blue Plaque Trail

Waterford Civic Trust has installed Blue Plaques in the City to commemorate a link between a particular location and a famous person or event. There are almost 40 blue plaques in the City, many located in easy walking distance in the City Centre and highlighted on our map. One of the famous people commemorated is Raymond Chandler, creator of  the fictional character Philip Marlowe, whose mother was born in Waterford City and who returned with her young son to Waterford for a number of years and for summer holidays.

Some other plaques of interest include:

• 33 The Mall, The location where the Irish Tricolour Flag was first flown by T.F. Meagher
• Ireland’s first garage, which was opened in Catherine Street in 1900 by William F. Pearle in
  partnership with Sir William Goff, is also commemorated.
• William Hobson, the first Governer of New Zealand was born on Lombard Street
• William Vincent Wallace, the famous Opera Composer was born on Colbeck Street
• Edmund Rice (Arundel Lane) who founded the Christian & Presentation Brothers
